Soda ash (sodium carbonate, Na₂CO₃) plays a critical role in gold refining as a fluxing agent that enhances the efficiency and purity of the smelting process. 

• Fluxing Agent: Soda ash lowers the melting point of impurities and metal oxides, allowing them to form a slag that floats on top of molten gold.  This slag can be easily skimmed off, separating it from the purified gold.

• Impurity Removal: It reacts with acidic oxides (like silica) and base metal oxides (e.g., lead, zinc), converting them into stable, removable compounds. This helps purify the gold and improve recovery rates. 

• Slag Formation and Stability: Soda ash contributes to forming a fluid, stable slag that improves heat distribution and reduces flux separation during refining.
